This is a fantastic and thoughtful historical site, respectfully presenting the history of the Jamestown settlers and Powhatan natives they encountered. The reconstructions are well done, the reenactments are accurate, and the exhibits in the museum proper are tasteful and thought provoking. I wish I had spent more time here, but my whole family enjoyed it and I suspect we will be back. I would recommend at least a full day here if you have it. More would be better.
Took my older teenage kids here for a dose of historical perspective. We found it to be informative and educational. Understand, that this is a recreation site. The buildings and ships are replicas, but the staff knows their stuff and seems to enjoy sharing it. Some had the monotone voice of saying the same things a million times over, but MOST were fun and enjoyable. The ships were quite cool to walk around on and it was a good dose of reality of the conditions of life at sea and the days of yore.
So much to do with so little time. The crowds where great when we went there. We didn't have time to do even half the attractions. All the staff that we encountered were great and friendly. Grabiella was our tour guide and she was amazing with the kids! Highly recommend going to Jamestown with the family. We will be back.
The flint knapper, dugout artisans and handicrafts were very interesting. Oh, and they had a thing they did with the kids where they held swords and shields and lined up in battle formations. That one activity was too long in my opinion. Not just for modern kids and their short attention spans; it was just too long for any kid... heck, I don't think I would have stood there the whole time he was doing the demonstration.
One of the best museums/sites we have ever visited. Detailed history laid out in stages, easy to follow and very good descriptions along the way. The replica tall ships in the harbor were built to the same design/dimensions as the ones used by the settlers making this even more amazing. The settlement was well staffed who were highly knowledgeable and willing to speak with you on all aspects of the history behind the settlement. The restaurant on-site offers an excellent variety of food at a very affordable price so it allows you time to break during your experience. Expect to spend the better part of a day. This is a MUST VISIT site!!!!
This was like taking two college history courses. We were there for four hours and my wife met someone from New Mexico like her, so what are the odds? The building was expansive and the displays had different lighting or sounds to enhance the effect HIGHLY recommend this. Stopped by last year and went to the right but this year we went to the left. Since I grew up in Virginia, I had a much better understanding of the history and circumstances that or a part of America and Virginia. Apparently people from other states don't have the same classes or education requirements that Virginia has in its Public Schools. I enjoyed sharing my information with people who were not from Virginia. I guess some of that turned out for the best no matter what I thought at the time. LOL
All in all, a good stop and worth the money. At least there is something to see and activities for the kids.
